Lawrence's Sonily Pena provided the Cinderella story in Day 1 of the Division 1 state wrestling tourney at Newton South.
As the 13th seed at 132 pounds, Pena pinned South champion Guillermo Novao of New Bedford in 2:59 then stopped Lincoln-Sudbury's Jake Galligani — Central runner-up — in 1:07 to make the semis.
Pena's task gets harder today as he faces returning champ Paul Sughrue of Methuen, who advanced via a pair of technical falls.
Others advancing to the semis include Methuen's Billy Wehring and Lawrence's Hector Reynoso at 106, Christian Monserrat of Methuen and Anfrenee Green of Lawrence at 126, 220-pound competitors Samie Al-Ziad of Haverhill and Ian Butterbrodt of North Andover at St. John's Prep, and Eagles teammate Corey Jean-Jacques of Haverhill at 285.
