TEWKSBURY — Central Catholic dominated Andover High almost from the opening tap. It played swarming defense from start to finish. It got a big performance from its star player. And it advance to the Div. 1 North finals at the Tsongas Arena on Saturday.
Sound familiar?
It should. It's exactly what happened the night before when the Central boys faced off with their rivals from Andover the night before at Lawrence High in the North semis.
This time the Central girls whupped Andover, 62-31, winning three of their four meetings this winter. They will play the winner of the Billerica-Westford game on Thursday night at Whittier Regional in Haverhill.
Central led 7-6 about halfway through the first quarter before putting the clamps on Andover's top scorer, Devon Caveney. Central went on a 14-0 run, which Caveney finally ended with a lay-in, but for the most part it was too late.
While Central senior Casey McLaughlin, who passed the 1,000-point plateau, sat on the bench for much of that run with two fouls, she killed any hopes of a second half comeback scoring 21 of her 24 points in the second half.
Central also got big nights on both sides of the floor from a trio of juniors — point guard Alex Nagri (8 points), Amanda Williams (10 points) and Caitlin Dell'Orfano (8).
"Their defense was too tough," said Andover coach Jim Tildsley, who has hinted this could be his last season. "They were all over Devon. We couldn't get her free. They were a much better team tonight."
