Sherry hits 1,000 in win over Classical

If Danvers High's Danielle Sherry was extremely nervous in her quest for 1,000 career points last night, she didn't show it on the court.

Sherry needed eight points for 1,000. She ended up scoring eight of the Falcons' first 10 points and finished with 22 as Danvers topped Lynn Classical, 47-38. Danvers has won six of its last seven to improve to 8-4.

Sherry's big moment came with 43 seconds left in the first quarter when she scored No. 1,000 on a foul shot. She became just the second Danvers girl to surpass 1,000 points. Lindsay Wight finished her career with 1,059 and Sherry now has 1,014. "To have a chance for the whole team to participate in something like this | it's just great," said Danvers coach Pat Veilleux. "We started off a little slow, but Danielle bailed us out. She just stayed focus.

"It was a big accomplishment for Danielle and a big night for us as a team. We thought (Lynn Classical) would come out with a special defense and sure enough, they threw a box-and-one on us. But we're used to that stuff and Danielle tortures those things."

Freshman Kellie Macdonald added eight points and nine rebounds for the winners and guard Ashley Burnham, who came up big in the fourth quarter, finished with seven. Veilleux also cited the play of Bailey Potter, who had four free throws in the third quarter when the offense was struggling.
