No. 15 Georgetown pulled off the biggest local upset of the state tournament thus far, shocking No. 2 Matignon, 67-62, in the first round of the Division 4 North tourney.

Taryn O'Connell tallied 24 points and 17 rebounds for the Royals, who improved to 11-10. Matignon, which fell to 18-3, trailed 45-23 at halftime before outscoring Georgetown 39-22 in after the break. But they couldn't overcome the Royals.

Julie Fehlmann added 16 points for the Royals, who next play in the North quarters Saturday at Lowell Catholic. The time is TBA.

"We dominated the boards in the first half," Georgetown coach BarriAnn Alonzo said. "We had a lot of second-shot opportunities. Matignon played hard to have a shot at a comeback. We tried to stay consistent and composed, and we came out with a win."

The win has Georgetown supporters thinking and praying for a bit of deja vu. In 2004, an 8-12 Royals squad made a Cinderella run all the way to the FleetCenter parquet.

If all the stars are aligned, maybe two Georgetown teams could do it. The boys, who more than held their own against Division 2 and 3 teams in the Cape Ann League, won their opener. They host perennial power North Cambridge Catholic on Friday in the quarterfinals.

Wow that Georgetown coach almost lost the game last night at Lowell. Taking our all the starters with a lot of time left on the clock was bizarre. The game was not as close at 7 points.
