Newburyport sophomore Lindsay Tomacz has seen her share of pressure situations as goalie of the Division 3 state champion soccer team.
But her soccer talents couldn't help her last night when she came to the free throw line four times in the closing three minutes of a River Rival game with Georgetown.
Tomacz connected on 4 of 4, icing a 46-41 Clipper victory at Georgetown High. Taylor Bresnahan led Newburyport (4-1) with 12 points. Taylor Hickman added 11. Samantha Baribeault had nine.
Julie Fehlmann led Georgetown (5-2) with 13 points. Taryn O'Connell added 12 points, 24 rebounds and six steals. Newburyport overcame a 22-16 halftime deficit.
"Our foul shots at the end were huge," Newburyport coach Neil Reardon said. "It was back-and-forth the entire way. Lindsay's four free throws were huge, and Hannah Chase came off the bench to hit 1 of 2. We needed every one of those points."
The Clippers hit four of their five 3-pointers in the second half.
"There was a good crowd tonight | I think because of the teams' records coming in," Reardon said. "We fed off that the first two minutes and last two minutes."
Newburyport held a 7-0 lead two minutes into the game. Georgetown outscored the Clippers 22-9 in the remaining 14 minutes before the half.
"We did a good job of coming back after that first two minutes," Georgetown coach BarriAnn Alonzo said. "If we didn't have that rocky start, it would've been a different game."
