Georgetown beat Division 4 rival Winthrop in the consolation round of the Spartan Classic. The Royals (13-7) received 24 points from Jaymie Spears, 22 of which came in the second half.
"They shut him down with a box-and-one in the first half," Georgetown coach Mike Rowinsky said. "He made the adjustments in the second half, and we won a game we probably shouldn't have won."
Spears was 9 for 12 from the free throw line including 4 of 4 in overtime. Julio Colon defended Winthrop's tallest player | a 6-6 center.
"The reason it was such a big game was because everybody had Winthrop as the team to beat in Division 4," Rowinsky said. "Now we'll get a high seed, maybe a bye. Home court advantage is even a possibility. We're playing our best basketball right now, and that's a good way to go into the tournament."
