Phillips Academy coach Leon Modeste had nothing but praise for the work of running back Tyler West.

"Tyler is a true champion," said Leon. "He battled and had a great game."

The senior, in his first game at the new position, West carried a stunning 38 times for 242 yards and a touchdown as Phillips fell just short to N.M.H. 20-6 yesterday afternoon.

"This was our most competitive game of the season," said Modeste. "The kids are hanging in and giving it all they have. We are playing a lot better."

West, a postgrad from Belmont Hill, was the starting quarterback for the Big Blue heading into the season. But last week, Modeste made the decision to convert him to halfback.

"We were going to run the triple option but injuries held us back," he said. "So we just decided to give him the ball. Now we need to figure out another way to move the football."

West gave the Big Blue the lead with a 2-yard touchdown plunge in the second quarter, and his 242 yards accounted for all but 30 accumulated by Phillips. That after he gained just 19 yards a week ago against North Andover.

He also stood out at defensive back, making eight tackles.

Also lead the Big Blue was senior defensive lineman John O'Brien, who made a team-high 17 tackles, 12 of which solo, and a sack.
