HAVERHILL — All the rain this week simply couldn't cool down Lawrence High senior Victor Mendez.

The right-hander pitched a complete-game, holding one of the state's most fearsome lineups, Central Catholic, to just two hits.

He struck out seven and walked six, stranding the tying and lead runs in the seventh at second-and-third.

Yet, it was Mendez' bat and a mighty two-run bomb he stroked in the top of the first that had folks buzzing at Haverhill Stadium last night.

"He hit it to left center, about four rows up into the football stands," said Lancer coach Brendan Neilon of the two-run, first-inning blast. "It's the furthest ball I've ever seen hit in person."

Hector Perez added a clutch two-run single in the fourth as the 14-3 Lancers built a 4-0 lead.

Struggling a bit with the strike zone, all the runs vs. Mendez went unearned.

Dan Shields took the tough loss for Central, allowing only seven hits.

The Raiders managed just two hits, one apiece by Ryan Sullivan and Colin Walsh.

Still, with this being a non-conference game, Central at 7-6, can still earn a share of its fourth straight MVC title.

The Raiders will be busy all weekend, having started a run of five games in five days yesterday.

At 7-4 in the league, the Raiders are chasing 8-3 Chelmsford and 8-3 Lowell, who play tonight at Alumni Field.

"They're in the driver's seat right now," said Raider coach Marc Pelletier. "We're in the back seat."

Central would need a loss from Lowell, either to Chelmsford or Andover, then would have to beat Andover and then Chelmsford to gain a share of the championship.
