The conditions were miserable — wet and cold — but the outcome was beautiful for the Portsmouth baseball team, which defeated Sanborn 2-0 yesterday to tie the national record for consecutive wins at 75.

The victory pushed Portsmouth’s Division II record to 12-0 and allowed the Portsmouth program to match Homer (Mich.) High School’s 75-game winning streak.

“I know they’ve caught some heat before about how they should be in Division I, but I don’t care what division you’re in,” Sanborn coach Mike Moore said. “To win 75 straight is an absolutely amazing feat.”

Tyler Johnson pitched well in defeat for Sanborn, giving up just two unearned runs.
