Raiders bounced in quarters

The No. 12 Central Catholic boys soccer team got off to a slow start and trailed 1-0 at halftime to No. 13 Wakefield, but tied the game up early in the second on a goal from Bobby Bakhtiari. But Wakefield took the lead thanks to a corner kick, and added insurance with a minute left to beat the Raiders, 3-1, in the Division 2 North quarterfinals.

Raiders advance

Eric Fisher set up teammate John McCarthy for a goal with 20 minutes left in regulation, and that was all the Central Catholic boys soccer team needed to take down Masconomet, 1-0, in the Division 2 North first round. James Sorenson played a strong game in net for the No. 12 Raiders (11-8), who were without starting defensive midfielder Alex Furry (concussion). And, the Raiders will actually get to host No. 13 Wakefield in the quarters on Saturday (6 p.m.).

The Central Catholic boys soccer team clinched a spot in the postseason for the fifth straight year with a 1-0 shutout of Billerica. Jackson Wetherbee scored the goal off a nice pass from John McCarthy, and James Sorenson posted the shutout in goal.

After giving up goals in its last two games following 13 straight shutouts, North Andover returned to form with a 4-0 boys soccer blanking of Central Catholic. Jack Detterman scored twice for the Knights (14-1-1) and Tyler Bussell made four saves in goal.

Eric Fisher scored the game-winner with less than 10 minutes to play as Central Catholic edged a strong Minnechaug team, 2-1. John McCarthy also scored for the Raiders, who improved to 2-1.

Bobby Bakhtiari and Alex Furry each scored twice in the second half to turn a one-goal halftime deficit into a 6-4 Central Catholic victory over Tewksbury. Gehrig Bennett opened the scoring for the Raiders, and Eric Fisher ended it with a beautiful goal.
