Framingham ends Andover's season

Andover’s game plan entering its Division 1 North semifinal contest against Framingham: control time of possession.

“We knew going in that we needed the ball more than they had it because their attack is so strong and they’re so skilled and so athletic,” Andover coach John McVeigh said. “They have three all-Americans on the attack. It makes it tough because they do a great job of sharing the ball with each other.”

“My heart’s still pounding like crazy,” she said with a huge smile. “Every minute we were up, then they were up. It was so nerve-wracking. But I’m just happy we pulled off the win.”

Andover won its sixth straight MVC large title with a 18-7 victory over Billerica. If Andover lost, it would have tied for first place. The Farnham sisters — Anne and Kate — combined for seven goals as Anne had four. Jen Caro also added four goals.

Andover girls lacrosse fell to Longmeadow, 15-7. The Lancers have made the state final the last eight years in a row. Alex Alois and Jaclyn Torries scored two goals apiece for the Golden Warriors.

Heartbreaking loss

 

In a battle of once-beaten girls lacrosse powers, Acton-Boxboro held off Andover 7-6. Trailing 7-5, the Warriors (10-2) scored with three minutes left and then had two goals called back and had a shot hit the cross bar. Kate Farnham had a goal and two assists for Andover.

Andover easily prevailed in a midseason battle of MVC unbeatens, humbling Billerica, 13-3. Defense was the key for the Warriors as Jaymi Cohen, Alex Alois and Kylie Nagy enhanced an outstanding performance from goalie Nora Huntley (eight saves).

Andover gets some payback

After being knocked out of the State Tournament by Reading last season, Andover got some revenge on Monday by squeaking past them 11-10. The Golden Warriors were down 8-5 at one point in the second half, but came back to win with Kate Farnham scoring the go-ahead goal.

And the only reason she tried it was because a sprained ankle and strained Achilles' tendon limited her mobility.
