First CAL win for Sachems

Pentucket made a quick start stand up, dispatching of Amesbury, 57-52 to win its first Cape Ann League contest of the season. The Indians closed to within four in the late stages but junior Taylor Beaton hit all four of his free throws to preserve the victory. John Piccolomini paced the Sachems (4-14) with a career-high 12 points.

Pentucket 57, Amesbury 52

Pentucket ended its nine-game losing streak as John Piccolomini and Joe Casey led the Sachems with 12 points and 11 points, respectively.

Bill Medvitz led the Indians with 20 points, Tyler Lay had 14 points, and Steve Serwon had 11 points and 18 rebounds.

Bill Medvitz led Amesbury (2-14) with 15 points. Stephen Deas added 10. Steve Serwon had seven points and 15 rebounds.

"We forced them to the waning seconds on the shot clock on many possessions," Amesbury coach Thom Connors said. "They didn't have a single player beat us. They had 10 players score."

Indians win first CAL game

The Amesbury Indians (2-13) won the first CAL game of the season, outlasting Ipswich (4-9) for a 63-57 victory. The Indians trailed nearly all game before putting the Tigers away in the fourth with 27 points in the quarter. Bill Medvitz scored all 23 of his points in the second half, Stephan Deas had 17 points and three rebounds, David Miller added 14 points and seven rebounds, and Steve Serwon scored nine points and grabbed 14 rebounds.

Amesbury played its best game of the season with a balanced offensive attack as four Indians scored in double figures, but again the the Indian free throws trouble reared its ugly head as Lynnfield was able to come from behind to get the win in the second half, 69-63.

Hornets headed to postseason

The North Reading boys basketball team improved to 10-1 and qualified for postseason play thanks to yesterday's 76-58 win over Amesbury. The Hornets were led by Darren Hartwell (15 points) and Kevin Lentini (12 points). A true team effort, North Reading had 11 players record at least two points.
