LAWRENCE — Lawrence High got off to a slow start but once it got rolling, North Andover was in trouble.

The Lancers blew open a close game to post a 67-44 win in the opening game of the Greater Lawrence Christmas Tourney. The hosts will take on Central Catholic in a much-anticipated semifinal showdown Monday at 6 p.m.

Up by two at halftime, the North Andover boys basketball team caught on fire in the third  scoring 26 points in the eight-minute quarter against Rockpoint in its 62-35 win. However even more impressive than its scoring was its defense, which held the Vikings to zero points throughout the frame. 

"The first one is important.  They earned it tonight against a good Masconomet team. We ran and defended very well." 

Edwin Gonzalez (19) and Matt Richardson (13) racked up 32 combined points to help Methuen topple North Andover, 54-37, in the season opener for both squads. North Andover held the lead after the first quarter, 6-4, but Methuen stormed back with a 16-point second quarter to go up 20-12 at the half. Evan Sheehan led the way for the Scarlet Knights with eight points, and Ryan Bruynell contributed six points and six rebounds for a depleted North Andover squad that was missing several seniors.
