It's the second straight season Timberlane finished undefeated and the fifth time in the last six years. Sick, but not sunk

Despite missing heavyweight star Brian Nicoll with the flu and bumping several wrestlers to a higher class, Timberlane smacked perennial standout Concord — the last New Hampshire team to beat the Owls (two years ago) — 46-19. Alex Smith had a key 7-6 decision, and Nick Scali squeezed out a 3-2 decision at 152.

Overwhelming Owls

In a rare Friday night dual meet, host Timberlane handed previously unbeaten Lisbon High School, one of Maine's top teams, a 57-13 beating. Sophomore Ben Tammany had the biggest win, a third-period pin of Maine's premiers 215 pounder, Joe Doughty  while Nick Lawrence (145) and Nick Scali (152) also had big wins. Lisbon had been 13-0 and returned 12 starters from a state championship team.

Owls prevail in Maine

SANFORD, Maine — Once again, the Timberlane wrestling team completed a holiday sweep of two of the toughest tournaments in New England.
But it wasn’t easy.
The Owls, after a tough semifinal round, battled back in the final round yesterday to capture the Redskin Invitational in Sanford, Maine, for the third year in a row and fifth time in six years.
Timberlane, which won the Lowell Holiday Tournament six days earlier, finished with 221 points with Connecticut power Danbury second (188 1/2) in the 20-team field.
“We had a tough semifinal round, and lost some we should have won, but I was really proud of the way we came back in the consolation round,” said Timberlane coach Barry Chooljian. “Things weren’t going our way, and we were definitely the hunted, but I liked the way we battled back.”
Five wrestlers recovered from semifinal losses to finish third. They were Zach Bridson (103), Dave Clemens (135), Nick Lawrence (145), Eric Petrillo (171) and sophomore Ben Tammany (215). It was the best tournament performance yet for Tammany.
The Owls had three finalists, meanwhile, and each captured their weight classes. Cam Sullivan won his first major tournament at 125, recording a major decision in the finals, and Alex Smith (130) and heavyweight Brian Nicoll both followed their Lowell Holiday titles with crowns.
Smith also had a major decision in the finals and Nicoll claimed a 6-2 decision.
The schedule won’t get any easier for the Owls, who’ll be at the rugged Eastern States Classic next weekend.

Ominous season debut

The Timberlane wrestling team gave what may have been a sign of things to come by whipping Exeter 65-3 last night in its season opener. Despite starting three freshmen and bumping up most of their regulars, the Owls had six pins and a technical fall and their only loss was a one-pointer by a freshman. Cam Sullivan, who was at 103 last year, had the win of the night with a 5-1 decision at 130 over Class L placer Chris Scott and 215-pounder Ben Tammany had the quickest pin, at 1:09.
