Glynn gets his All-State title

METHUEN – Mike Glynn knew all about being a runner-up.

Saturday, he earned his All-State crown.

The Central Catholic senior, who finished twice each of the previous two seasons, had his way with the tough 138-pound field at Methuen, earning four decisions by a combined 44-12.

Three from Central Catholic and Haverhill's Ben Davoli (113) and Jake Nicolosi (145) were among nine local wrestlers who advanced Friday at the All-State meet to this morning's semifinals.

Central in D2 lead


Central Catholic placed six wrestlers in the semifinals and held a commanding lead in the team standings of the Division 2 state meet in Milton. Advancing for the Raiders were Jimmy Glynn (106), Stephen Donovan (132), Mike Glynn (138), Nate Vachon (145), Matt Shaw (152) and Anthony Mears (220). Also advancing to the semis were North Andover's Ethan Ford (132) and Jack Carbone (195).

Iwanicki, Prep finish on top


METHUEN — St. John's Prep's Rawson Iwanicki of Andover is one very confident freshman, so much so that some might call him cocky.

But that would be a mistake because Iwanicki, as he showed Saturday at the Division 1 North sectional, has good reason to be confident. By defeating Lawrence's talented John Vasquez 8-3 in the finals, Iwanicki improved to his season record to a sterling 45-2.

LAWRENCE — Central Catholic and Methuen have enjoyed some close, intense battles on the mat over the last decade.

But Tuesday afternoon was not one of them as the host Raiders romped to a 57-14 victory, improvinf their record to 20-2 and clinching at least a share of the MVC Division 1 title.
