Matthews' career day paces Sanborn

On day rainy day made for running backs, Zach Matthews delivered the game of his life.

The Sanborn senior exploded for a stunning 215 yards on just 14 carries, scoring three times and leading Sanborn to a 35-13 domination of ConVal on Saturday.

"Zach was excellent today," said Indians coach John Welch. "He ran hard, had some great holes and just did a terrific job."

The 6-foot, 190-pound fullback used his power and speed to run through the competition. He broke a 40-yard touchdown run in the first, scored from 26 yards out in the second and closed out the scoring with a 10-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

He also caught two passes for a team-high 25 yards and continued to lead the defense from his linebacker position.

"Zach did it all," said Welch After contact he kept his legs going, he got the tough yards and, as always, he was huge on defense."

The Indians had plenty of stars in a dominant defensive effort, holding ConVal off the scoreboard until the backups entered the game in the fourth.

Ryan Rose wreaked havoc in the Cougars' backfield, earning three sacks on the day. When ConVal was able to get a pass off, the Indians' defensive backs were often there, with Cam MacNeil, Hunter Jenkins and Mike D’Amelio each earning an interception.

"The defense played extremely well," said Welch. "Multiple guys were getting to the ball, Rose and Kyle Storms did a great job containing the quarterback. It was a great overall effort."
