Its interior offensive game simply extinguished by Charlestown's 2-3 zone defense, Andover High simply shot its way out of the Division 1 North tourney, falling in their first-round matchup, 72-52, here last night.

ANDOVER — Battling through recent struggles shooting the basketball, North Andover’s Jimmy Warden received reassuring words from coach Mike McVeigh.

James Costello was money from the line, knocking down 10 free throws to lead Andover to a 45-39 victory over Lincoln-Sudbury in the Warrior Classic first round. The Golden Warriors hit 22 free throws as a team.

Central Catholic has had bigger stars and more star power.

Rick Nault, though, said he's never had a more driven squad.

"I don't think many people would have had us at 18-1 at this point," said Nault, whose Raiders claimed sole possession of their sixth straight MVC Division 1 title with a 72-54 thumping of Andover last night.

James Costello grabbed 14 rebounds and Connor Merinder added 12 as Andover boys basketball won 48-38 over Lowell.

Merinder also recorded seven blocks. 

Sam Dowden scored 27 points and pulled down nine rebounds as Andover won for the second straight game,  this time with a 68-55 win over Haverhill. James Costello had 10 for Andover and Edwin Valentin led Haverhill with 23.
