Eric Popp homered to deep center and North Reading flexed some muscle in a 7-1 win over Newburyport. Nick Rosano tripled in a run and Ben Harrow smacked a two-run single, making a winner out of Kris Cavanaugh.

So close

North Reading was just one more key hit away from breaking its four-game losing streak, but ended up falling in heartbreaking fashion to Wilmington, 7-6 in nine innings. Eric Popp's two-run triple tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning and Ben Harrow retied the score in the seventh with a two-out base hit. After the Wildcats posted a three-run ninth, the Hornets responded with a pair of unearned runs but couldn't push the equalizer across.

Lynnfield 7, North Reading 5

Lynnfield exploded for seven sixth-inning runs, rebounding from a 5-0 deficit to defeat North Reading, 7-5. Chris Kavanaugh impressed in his first start on the mound, throwing five strong innings before tiring, while adding a perfect 3 for 3 effort at the plate with two RBIs. Kavanaugh has had at least a hit in all five of the Hornets' games so far.

Sophomore Ryley Warnock allowed just three hits, struck out 10 and did not surrenter an earned run for his first varsity victory as North Reading opened its season with a 6-1 win over Hamilton-Wenham.
