Rising up

Timely defense and a top-heavy offense earned Whittier its third straight victory, 5-1 over Division 1 foe Haverhill. Sophomore second baseman Nate Frongillo played "the best defensive game I've seen in a long time," according to Wildcat coach Joe Boland, making several stops that stopped Hillies runs from scoring. Brian Vezina had an RBI triple as well as a double and leadoff man George Gouthier added a pair of doubles.

Wells leads Whittier past hometown team

Methuen resident Andrew Wells drove in a key run and scored another in the first inning and played stellar defense at shortstop to help lead Whittier past Methuen 3-2.

Brian Vezina got Whittier's offense going with a two-run triple, then sophomore Anthony Licciardello had a clutch RBI double that countered a Greater Lawrence rally and helped the Wildcats take a tight 10-9 decision. Jose Abreu hit a game-tying three-run homer to aid the Reggie cause.

Paul Mahoney threw 5 2/3 strong innings and had three hits offensively including a pair of doubles and three RBIs as Whittier clobbered Monty Tech, 10-3. Sophomores Nate Frongillo and Andrew Wells added two hits each as part of a 16-hit attack for the Wildcats.

'Cats D up

Sophomore Andrew Wells was at his efficient best, throwing just 69 pitches in a complete-game three-hitter as Whittier topped Shawsheen, 8-2.  Classmate Nate Frongillo turned in the "defensive play of the year" so far, according to head coach Joe Boland, when the second baseman dove to backhand a rocket over the bag in the third inning. More strong defense was played by Anthony Licciardello, another sophomore, and junior Brian Vezina.
