Great tuneup


Whittier's surging softball team tuned up for this week's Methuen Tournament with an impressive 6-2 victory over Andover. Cassey Glode (2 for 2)  drilled a two-run homer in the first inning and scored three runs and Jen Dube hurled a fine four-hitter for the win. The Wildcats (16-2) face Lawrence Friday in the first round of the tourney.

Milestone win


Whittier's softball team handed perennial power Shawsheen its first Commonwealth Conference loss in two years, 5-2 in a five-inning game shortened by rain. Taylor Miller was the winning pitcher for the Wildcats (11-2) and Cassey Glode was 2 for 2 with her seventh home run of the season.

Taylor Miller had a no-hitter through six innings for Whittier Tech until Northeast stroked a lead-off double, but the junior settled on a one-hitter with eight strikeouts and one walk in a 10-0 victory. Cassey Glode smacked two long homers and drove in five runs while Josie Sanchez also homered.
