Matt Washburn, Andover: The Golden Warriors allowed only 56 yards through the air in their loss to BC High, and Washburn was a key part. The defensive back stood out in coverage and was second on the team with nine tackles.

John DiBitetto, Central Catholic
: The senior defensive back came up with eight tackles, including a fumble-inducing bone-cruncher in the Raiders' loss to St. John's Prep.

Matt Kumph, Georgetown: The Royals offense has gotten the headlines, but Kumph led a stout Georgetown defensive attack in Saturday's 14-0 win over Lynnfield. The senior defensive end made three sacks, and the defense allowed only 133 yards of offense. He also blocked for another big game for Joe Esposito (162 rushing yards).

Brian Rivera, Greater Lawrence: The linebacker was a bright spot in the 16-0 loss to Groton-Dunstable. Rivera made seven tackles, second on the team to Juan Olivo.

Dan Triplett, Haverhill: The 6-foot senior rushed for 117 yards on 10 carries and scored on a 72-yard run in the Hillies' 28-21 loss to Catholic Memorial. Triplett also played a solid defensive end, containing most of Memorial's end sweeps.

Ramon Heredia, Lawrence: The senior continues to prove he is among the top quarterbacks around in a 37-23 win over Newburyport. He was 16 of 22 through the air for 214 yards and three first-half touchdowns. He also carried the ball 10 times for 49 yards and the final touchdown of the day. For good measure he connected on a two-point conversion.

Joe McLaughlin, Londonderry: The halfback proved he has speed to burn in the Lancers' 33-12 defeat of Concord. The 5-7, 200-pounder broke off runs of 97 and 60 yards and topped 200 yards for the game.

Chris Buco, North Andover: The receiver stood out in the Scarlet Knights' 37-20 loss to Amesbury. The senior caught three passes from freshman Brandon Walsh for 59 yards. Two of those grabs went for scores, first from 21 yards out, then 33 yards.

Tim Shaffer, Pelham: Bruce Vieira is the No. 1 guy in Pelham, but it was Schaffer leading the Pythons in their 32-0 drubbing of Somersworth. Schaffer scored the game's first two touchdowns on runs of 3 and 5 yards and chipped in a 20-yard reception.

Chris Modlish, Pentucket: The Sachems looked like a different team than the one that lost on opening day, and Modlish sparked the Pentucket offense in a 46-0 drubbing of Greater Lowell. He rushed for a career-high 127 yards and touchdowns of 49 and 5 yards. It was his second career 100-yard game, and followed a 53-yard game in Week 1.

Matt Fiori, Pentucket
: Back at offensive tackle after opening the season at tight end, Fiori led a dominant offensive line that opened holes for the Sachems backs to rush for 307 yards. He also stood out on the defensive line, tying for the team-high with five tackles.

Sam Clark, Phillips: The Andover High grad keeps making his presence felt with the Big Blue. He made four tackles and recorded a sack in Phillips' 28-8 win over Loomis Chaffee. He also stood out at his new position of tight end.

Colton Desmarais, Pinkerton: The senior defensive back scooped up a fumble and waltzed into the end zone for his first touchdown in the Astros' 34-13 win at West. He later added an 18-yard catch in the win.

Chris Najem (and the rest of the backfield), Salem: After rushing for 23 yards on 11 carries against Londonderry, Najem stomped the Manchester Memorial defense, running for 150 yards on nine carries and three touchdowns. Overall, Salem put up 431 rushing yards on 48 carries against the Crusaders.

Danny Richard, Sanborn: The offensive lineman helped lead an ever-improving Indians attack, and blocked for Kyle Nadeau's touchdown. He also recovered a fumble.

Matt Faia and Wesley Grew, Timberlane: Faia grabbed an interception in the second quarter with Merrimack threatening from Timberlane's 36-yard line, while Grew sacked quarterback Tyler King for an 8-yard loss just several minutes later. Faia also had a later interception that was overturned after a Timberlane holding penalty.
