HAVERHILL - On a night of wild, long-yardage scoring plays that Peabody and Haverhill kept trading off, it seemed reasonable to think that some unorthodox play would finally decide the game.

Sisters Laura and Sarah Farnum played key roles in No. 10 North Andover's Division 1 North first round win, 3-0, over Peabody. Sarah, a junior, led the Knights with 26 assists while Laura, a sophomore, had a team-high three aces.

Lauren Gulvicki notched 18 kills and five blocks as North Reading rallied for a 16-25, 25-21, 25-19, 19-25, 15-7 win over Peabody.

Andover baseball picked up a pair of wins on Sunday, first beating New Hampshire's Bishop Guertin 12-9 before taking down Peabody 4-2 in 9 innings.

NORTH ANDOVER — With the dream of a hat trick dancing in his head, Zach Keating admits his excitement may have overtaken him for a moment.

“I almost had that third (goal),” he said with a laugh. “I’m the only one on my line that doesn’t have a hat trick this season, and I may have gotten a little over excited. I may have been trigger happy.”

In a tuneup for Wednesday's home showdown against Central Catholic, Methuen easily swept a aud-meet to improve to 21-1. Jatrmany Colon had three pins at 106 for the Rangers, Chris Ramos was 3-0 at 126 and the upper weights dominated.

PEABODY — From the night of its heartbreaking tournament loss to Everett, Haverhill football set one goal for the rest of 2016, to finish the season 9-2.

Kate Hulme's goal early in the second half gave No. 13 Methuen a 6-5 lead but No. 4 Peabody rallied for the 9-7 Division 1 North first round win. Nicole Hering capped her fine career with two goals. The Tanners pulled away despite missing top scorer Lauren Wolff (season-ending concussion). 

Dana Rodrigues notched his second hat trick in the last three games to lift North Andover past Peabody 4-2. Eric Hall came on in relief and stepped all 24 shots he faces. Ironmen Brett Kochanski and A.J. Keating led the blue-line crew. 

The Central Catholic volleyball team dominated Peabody in the first set and never looked back, upsetting the No. 2 seed for a 3-0 win. Hallie Dunn led the Raiders with nine kills, and Katherine Antczak had 25 assists.
