Northern Essex surges

 

A strong second half propelled Northern Essex to an 82-67 victory over Roxbury, improving its record to 11-9.  Guney Kilitcioglu led the scoring with a game-high 23 points while Lawrence's Alexis Estrella  tossed in 18 points and had eight rebounds.

Brooks wins Christmas tourney

P.J. Kelleher, K.J. Moore, Max Rand and Chris White each scored goals and Max Prawdzik made 20 saves to lead Brooks 4-2 over Tilton in the Brooks-Pingree boys hockey Christmas Tournament.

Relay takes third

 

Methuen's 4x400 relay placed secoon at the East Coast Invitational in Providence. Willie Weinhold, Mike O'Donnell, John St. Hilaire and Ruddy Severino were clocked in 3:37.86, about two seconds behind Classical High School of Rhode Island.

Upset of the century?

Even as just a near upset, its a game that will shock the prep basketball world. Phillips Academy threw a mighty scare into Tilton, the No. 4 team in the country in the SI.com/5-Star poll, before falling 66-62. Haverhill's Ryan Hartung scored 16 points and Brendan O'Connell of Andover had 14 points, and the two combined for seven 3-pointers. Haverhill's Tom Palleschi added 12 points (he now has 997 for his career) and eight rebounds for the Big Blue.

Heartbreaker for Phillips

Phillips Academy appeared to have fate on their side against Tilton when junior defenseman Bennett Carrochio scored the tying goal with just 24 seconds left in the third period but would ultimatly fall just 44 seconds into overtime. Post-grad Josh Geary scored one and assisted one and goalie Glen Stowell stopped 20 shots as Phillips fell to 8-2-1. Former Andover Golden Warrier Nick Drew had 23 saves for Tilton.

Tilton too much for Pingree

Lemarre Rey's 14-yard touchdown run in the second quarter cut Tilton's lead to 20-7, but the Highlanders couldn't draw any closer as they slipped to 2-4.

Derek Pratt had another strong all-around game for Pingree, catching four balls for 95 yards, while rushing for 47 yards. Senior quarterback Carlos O'Donnell completed 11-of-24 passes for 165 yards.
