Taylor Clough set a new Phillips pool record, scoring 324.05 points in 1-meter diving as part of the Big Blue's 118-66 defeat of Deerfield. Jun Oh (200 and 500 freestyle), Alex Nanda (50 and 100 freestyle) and Matt Mahoney (200 IM and 100 breaststroke) won a pair of events apiece.

Ryan Hartung of Haverhill scored 32 points to lead Phillips boys basketball to a 72-61 victory over Deerfield.

Methuen's Jason Buco returned a kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown, and caught a 22-yard touchdown pass, but Phillips could manage little more and fell to Deerfield Academy 32-14 last night.

"They just grounded us with their running game," said Big Blue coach Leon Modeste. "We couldn't stop them, and our offense couldn't get the ball."

Phillips split a doubleheader with Deerfield, losing the first game 7-4 and winning the second game 7-4. Bennett Carroccio stroked a single, double and triple and had two RBIs in Game 2. Tom Palleschi of Haverhill picked up the save in the second game.

Phillips star Malcolm Mason-Rodriguez opened the season in brilliant fashion with four wins, including a 23-1 in the long jump and a 45-1 in the triple jump, as the Big Blue swept a tri-meet.

Deerfield beat Phillips, 54-52, on a Jimmy Bitter 3-pointer at the buzzer. Phillips had led by 12 and prior to the winning hoop the Big Blue missed two free throws with eight seconds left. Khalid McCaskill led the Big Blue with 16 points.

The Phillips Academy boys basketball team, which dropped its first five games, won its fourth straight, tripping Deerfield 56-50. Bryan Hartung led a ballanced attack with 16 points, Tom Palleschi had 14 points and nine rebounds and Khalid McCaskill had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

DEERFIELD — Behind a career performance for Clay Cleveland, Phillips got back on track yesterday.

The former Masconomet star accounted for three touchdowns as the Big Blue offense exploded to snap a two-game losing sked with a 37-18 pounding of Deerfield Academy.
