Cleveland rocks, Phillips runs away with win

DEERFIELD — Behind a career performance for Clay Cleveland, Phillips got back on track yesterday.

The former Masconomet star accounted for three touchdowns as the Big Blue offense exploded to snap a two-game losing sked with a 37-18 pounding of Deerfield Academy.

"It was a very good win," said Phillips coach Leon Modeste. "After not playing last week because our opponent was sick, we were well rested and ready to finally play a game."

Cleveland rushed for 140 yards on just 17 carries and touchdowns of 25 and 21 yards. He also caught a 34-yard score. Andy Vailas added 122 yards through the air andrushed for 54 yards and a score, while Malcolm Mason-Rodriguez chipped in with 89 ground yards.

Andover's Mike Bernieri led the Big Blue defense with two sacks, while Beau Palin (9 tackles) and Zach Boyd (8 tackles) also stood out.

"The defense did a great job all over the field," said Modeste. "And Clay is a heck of a player."
