Central Catholic falls in shootout

LOWELL — It took overtime, a shootout and a disputed call for Central Catholic to suffer its first loss of the season.

After a feverous Raiders rally sent the game into overtime, Central Catholic saw a goal in the decisive shootout disallowed in its 3-2 loss (3-1 in the shootout) to Catholic Memorial in the second day of the Super 8 tournament.

Mike Masse of North Andover ran 16:33 to lead St. John's Prep past Catholic Memorial 22-39 at Bradley Palmer Park in Hamilton. Masse's time was the fifth fastest at Bradley in St. John's history.

CM wears out Haverhill

HAVERHILL — All those lovers of the classic David against Goliath tale nearly had a wonderful reenactment last night at Haverhill Stadium.But this time, Goliath proved too much as Catholic Memorial (2-0) wore down Haverhill 28-21 in a terrific non-league game in which all the scoring was done in the second half.Memorial, led by highly-recruited 6-foot-6, 270-pound senior Brennan Williams features an offensive line that averages 299 pounds and boasts three 300-pounders. Haverhill’s defensive line, meanwhile, averages 206 pounds.

Prep wins Catholic Conference opener

After a disappointing stretch in non-league games (3-4), the Eagles came up with their best effort of the season, downing Catholic Memorial on the road, 27-21, in their Catholic Conference opener.

Senior captain and tailback Derek Coppola led the way with 172 yards and two touchdowns, including the game winner, on 20 carries. Coppola's decisive touchdown came on a 3-yard pass play from Scott Darby with 35 seconds left in the game, snapping a 21-all tie.

Farr scores twice as Eagles blank CM

Alex Farr had a pair of goals to give St. John's Prep all the offense it needed in a 2-0 win over Catholic Memorial.
