Whittier falls short in Tech semifinals

NEW BEDFORD — A bus ride of more than two hours was the start of a tough evening for the Whittier Tech football team.

The Wildcats fell behind by two touchdowns in the first quarter, and lost to Greater New Bedford 35-8 in the quarterfinals of the Tech School tournament. 

"The kids went out and hung in there after a long, rough ride out there fighting traffic," said Whittier head coach Kevin Bradley. "We played well, and we were in the game. But we didn't capitalize on a few opportunities. I felt like we could have scored one or two more touchdowns in the first half."

Whittier's lone score came in the second quarter. Running back Jyzaiah Ferreira ran in a 4-yard touchdown. Quarterback Cam West then found Cam Richards for the two-point conversion.

Standout running back Julien Acevedo-Torres once again led the Wildcats offense with 98 rushing yards on 12 carries. He also caught four passes for 28 yards. Noah Mercier had a 48-yard grab from West, who ended the game 14-of-19 throwing for 131 yards. 

Ferrera on defense and Niko Burke led the Wildcats defense, while Tom Galvin excelled on special teams. special teams. 

Whittier now moves onto its traditional matchup with rival Greater Lawrence on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving on Whittier Tech's home field (6 p.m.)

"The kids will be pumped for the holiday game," said Bradley. "They've been playing hard all year, so I can't complain. We'll get back to practice and get ready for a good game."

'Cats lose duel

 

Whittier Tech lost a heartbreaking pitching duel in the State Vocational semifinals, 1-0 to Greater New Bedford, the defending Division 2 state champions. Nicole Verrette threw a nifty 4-hitter, striking out seven for the Wildcats (17-4) but Jenna Sylvia allowed just two hits for Greater New Bedford (19-2), which scored in the bottom of the seventh with two outs after a rundown between third base and home.

Pitchers' duel

Greater New Bedford blanked Whittier, 2-0, in the state vocational large school finals. Nicole Verrette fired a five-hiter with seven strikeouts in defeat.

'Cats rally in Voke

 Trailing by six points with 1:20 to play, Whittier Tech's girls rallied behind Olivia Beauchesne for a 62-59 overtime victory over Greater New Bedford in the semifinals of the State Vocational tournament. Beauchesne had eight points in the fourth quarter and a season-high 18 overall while adding nine rebounds. The Wildcats will play Blackstone Valley in the Voke finals today at 5 p.m..

Fighting for the finals

Whittier baseball's offense came alive at its last possible moment, getting half of its six hits in the bottom of the seventh inning for a comeback, walk-off 2-1 over Greater New Bedford in the Voke tourney semifinals. Alex LoGiudice had an RBI single and Anthony Licciardello followed with a deep double to dead center field to score the game-winner. Solid defense from middle infielders Jaylin Deveau and Connor Manning backed up pitcher Andrew Wells, who finished with a four-hitter and five strikeouts. The Wildcats will hit the road to take on Blackstone Regional tomorrow in the finals.
