St. John's Prep edged BC High, 241-245 to defend its Catholic Conference title. Nick Pandelena of Atkinson shot a 1-over par 37 and Haverhill's Nick Maccario was one stroke behind for the unbeaten Eagles (15-0, 8-0 in the league). Sophomore Nick McLaughlin of Newcastle, N.H., the state Junior champion, was medalist for the Prep with a 1-under 35.

Despite a plethora of strong scoring opportunities sparked by Bryan Burkhard and Cecchi MacNaughton, Andover's soccer squad were just nipped by St. John's Prep, 1-0.

St. John's Prep was lead to a 239 to 251 victory over Catholic Memorial, by Haverhill's Nick Maccario and Atkinson's Nick Pandelena who both shot 39's.

LAWRENCE — Central Catholic coach Chuck Adamopoulos gave Cam Walsh more than enough time to think about the situation and the junior kicker didn't disappoint, connecting on a 35-yard field goal with four minutes remaining last night to give the Raiders a 15-14 victory over St. John's Prep.

Two local low scorers lifted St. John's Prep to a 240-258 Catholic Conference victory over Xaverian at Salem CC. Nick Maccario of Haverhill led all competitors with a 38 and Atkinson's Nick Pandelena was just one shot of the pace.

LAWRENCE — The third time was the charm for St. John’s Prep.

Despite getting blanked by Andover twice in the regular season, the Eagles got the last laugh, ending the Golden Warriors’ season last night 25-20, 21-25, 19-25, 25-22, 16-14 in the Division 1 North Final.

St. John's Prep came out hitting from the start and held on to quell Central Catholic, 9-3. Playing at the Eagles' brand-new, Field Turf facility, shortstop and leadoff hitter Robbie Taylor provided the brunt of the scoring for the Raiders (12-5) with a two-run single as part of a three-run third frame.

Matt Washburn racked up 14 kills, 11 blocks and seven aces as Andover topped St. John's 25-22, 25-21, 25-22. In the final game alone, a frame that saw the Warriors trail by as many as four points (20-16), Washburn ran off six points in a row at one point and also made five solo blocks. Said coach George Sullivan, "His jump serves really broke their backs. He was just tough as nails to defend."

HAVERHILL — Nobody seemed positive who actually won the 33rd annual John Ottaviani-Haverhill Invitational. The teams listened intently and Central Catholic erupted when it heard, ‘‘In second-place, Methuen ...’’

St. John's Prep senior Chris Carmain had three hits and drove in three, helping to slay his hometown team Methuen, 15-3, yesterday.

In a cruel twist, it was the Prep's Nick Fabrizio, who earned the win against coach Dave Fabrizio's crew.
