Salem knocks off Berlin

The Salem boys hockey team picked up a nice 2-1 win over Berlin, the top ranked team in Division 3, after Jacob Sylvester scored the game-winner with 4:07 to play, assisted by Mitchell McGinn and Alec Svenson. Bryce Haynes had the other goal and Paddy Capsalis made 27 saves in the win.

Sanborn falls in semis

Sanborn field hockey's deepest run in the state tournament in decades came to an abrupt end on Tuesday, as the Indians were no match for top-seeded and unbeaten Berlin, losing 7-0 in the Division 3 semifinals. It was Sanborn's first appearance in the semifinals since 1994, and the Indians finish the year 13-4.

Pinkerton scored twice seven seconds apart in the final seconds of the second period and cruised past Berlin 3-0. Andrew Stefanelli scored at 14:46 and Jake Dionne lit the lamp at 14:53. J.J. Solloway stopped 32 shots as the Astros beat Berlin for only the second time in its history.

Henderson the unlikely hero as Salem advances

With the second highest-scoring offense in the area, Salem knew it could score. But Jared Henderson waited until the tournament to make an impact.

"I was just trying to keep the puck low and hard and get it on net," said the junior defenseman. "I saw a lot of bodies in front and I just hoped it would go in."
