Hanscom, Foley power Andover into quarters

ANDOVER — Anna Foley and Amelia Hanscom each scored 20 points and No. 1 Andover held off upset minded No. 16 Framingham, 60-52, Tuesday night at the Dunn Gym. Andover (19-1) advances to the State Division 1 quarterfinals against Cinderella No. 24 Newton North (12-11), which scored on an improbable buzzer-beater by Abigail Wright to beat Chelmsford, 46-45.

Valdez, Hillies advance

Junior Jeremy Valdez scored 13 of his game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter and No. 40 Haverhill erased a 5-point deficit in the final three minutes to beat No. 25 Framingham 62-56 in the Division 1 state preliminary round.
Coach Souleymane Wane said it was the Hillies' first tourney win since 2013.
Alejandro Delgado added 11 points and Alex Fuller had a season high 10. Patrick Roche had 12 big rebounds while Phelan Belin was the Hillies' defensive MVP.
"There is a lot of excitement here," said Wane. "The hard work we've put in is paying off."
Friday the Hillies are at No. 8 Beverly (6:30 p.m.).

Raiders on to finals

The Central Catholic girls hockey team had five different goal scorers and got 21 saves from goalie Liz Smith to take down Framingham, 5-2, in the first round of the Inclusion Cup Tournament. The Raiders will now play Algonquin in the tourney finals on Thursday at 2:20 p.m.

Lawrence takes 2nd

 

Lawrence has been struggling in dual meets thus far, but it made a huge statement Friday by placing second at the Framingham Tournament.

West Springfield was the impressive champion with 225 points but the Lancers were next in the 23-team field with 165. Methuen placed 11th.

Owls in the middle

 

Timberlane, as expected, is flexing its muscles in the middle weights. In a quad-meet sweep of Phillips Exeter, Framingham and Noble, Maine, Connor McGonagle, Antonio Pallaria and Nick Pallaria all had three pins from 138 to 152 pounds. One of Nick Pallaria's pins was over Maine state champ Sam Martel.

Methuen takes 3rd

 

FRAMINGHAM — They're becoming "The Big Three" for the Methuen wrestling team.

Zabian Cruz (145), Dan O'Connell (182) and heavyweight Bryce Smith all placed first for the third tournament of their still-young season as the Rangers finished third at the 22-team Framingham Tournament.
