Charlie Dean and Patrick Roy each scored four goals and Tyler Fay played shut-down defense to lead North Andover to a 17-6 victory over Melrose in the Players Cup Invitational. Matt Roy made 13 saves and Ean LaRochelle was 13 for 16 in the faceoff circle for the winners.

Brooke Tardugno led the way with 15 points, and Samantha Pfeil pitched in 14, lifting Methuen to a 49-46 win over Melrose. The Rangers built an 11-point lead through three quarters then hung on in the fourth to move to 6-10.

Wildcats clawed

The Whittier volleyball team saw its season come to an end with a 3-0 loss to No. 5 Melrose in the first round of the Division 2 North tournament. Siarra Cronin led the Wildcats (13-7) with 3 kills, 3 assists and an ace. It was win No. 400 for Melrose coach Scott Celli at the school, and his 555th overall.

500th for Hall

 

Olivia Hall had a night to remember Monday as she recorded her 500th career kill and was all over the court in a 3-2 Central Catholic victory over Melrose. Hall finished the match with team highs in kills (17), blocks (4) and digs (27) and also had three aces as the Raiders improved to 10-7.

Pentucket freshman Tyler Knox continued to dominate Saturday in the Division 3 North sectional, rolling to the 106-pound title with pins in 43, 41 and 36 seconds to raise his record to 38-0 on the year.

Andover topples No. 6 Melrose

MEDFORD — No. 22 Andover knocked off No. 6 Melrose, 4-3, in the first round of the state girls Division 1 hockey tourney.

The Golden Warriors (12-5-5) scored once in the first period then three goals in a six-minute span midway through second period. The game-winner was a short-handed tally from Emily Wagner. Melrose (17-4-1) scored a goal in each frame but Sean D'Urso (22 saves) and the Andover defense were up to the challenge.

Vikings top defending champs

Facing down the defending Division 3 state champions, Triton wrestling went to work and prevailed over Melrose 45-34. Jared Durkin and Sam Orender each pinned their opponents in barely a half minute, and Anthony Ostrander won a tough 5-3 decision at 160 pounds. Triton (14-2) will now face Pentucket on Wednesday with a chance to clinch the Cape Ann League title.
