Mystic Valley rolls past Royals in North quarters

MALDEN — In Saturday's MIAA Division 4 North tournament showdown between Mystic Valley and Georgetown, it took until the second have for someone to run away with it.

And that's literally what the Eagles did, churning up rushing yards in the second half to defeat the Royals 26-8 at Malden Catholic.

Reggies fall short

 

For the first time since 1984, the Greater Lawrence volleyball team failed to make the state tournament. The Reggies (9-10) seemed to be on their way, winning the first two games, but Mystic Valley then won the next three, the last by a 15-12 score after trailing 9-3. Alegna Reyes shined in defeat with 8 kills, 8 blocks, 17 service points and 5 aces.

Seniors shine for top-seeded Whittier

HAVERHILL — Whittier has rode the success of its stellar underclassmen all season. But in Tuesday's playoff game against Mystic Valley, it was time for some senior leadership to rise.

The biggest play in the Wildcats 8-1 quarterfinal victory over the Eagles came in the bottom of the first inning, when Christina Boutin crushed a triple to left field that cleared the bases and put her team up 4-0.

There is domination, and then there's what Haverhill softball did to Mystic Valley on Sunday. The Hillies clobbered their opponents to the tune of 27-0, with pitcher Bryana Michitson throwing a five-inning no hitter with 11 strikeouts while going 5 for 6 with five runs and two RBIs, and shortstop Michaela Kane hit for the cycle, going 4 for 6 with six RBIs and five runs, including her fifth home run of the season.

Brenna Donoghue knocked in four runs in a 14-run effort by Pentucket, but unfortunately in a losing effort. Mystic Valley scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to reclaim the lead, and Pentucket could not convert a bases-loaded opportunity in the top of the seventh.

Whitter hands Mystic Valley first loss

Mystic Valley girls entered an undefeated 11-0 and ranked seventeenth in the Boston Globe's Eastern Mass. rankings heading into their contest with Whittier. Led by 13 points from Xciana Flores, the Wildcats notched a huge 57-46 victory Tuesday night. Whittier held Mystic Valley's leading scorer Meghan Foley to just 10 points. Foley had averaged 28 heading into the matchup.
