Five straight service points from Katie St. Peter was the quick game-five start PMA needed, holding off Mystic Valley to take the deciding game, 15-9. St. Peter finished with 23 kills, 7 blocks, 18 service points and 5 aces, getting strong offensive help from Krista Petrone (19 assists) to boost the Panthers (5-7) to the win.

Rally Cats

Whittier pushed across three runs in the top of the seventh to rally past Mystic Valley, 3-2. Steve Surette was hit by a pitch and scored on a Bill Lafferty double. Steve Clark walked but Lafferty was thrown out on a passed ball. Damian Colman smashed a deep triple to bring in Clark. Nate Allen singled in what proved to be the winning run.

In spite of losing the first set 22-25, the Whittier girls volleyball team stormed back to win the next three 25-6, 25-12, 25-18. Samantha Dietrich led the way with an astounding 24 service points, including 12 aces. She also added a team-high six kills, while Kendra Hobbs recorded 10 assists.

Hornets Make Quick Work of Mystic Valley

BEVERLY - Manchester Essex head football coach Mike Athanas said Saturday's game against Mystic Valley demonstrated his team's character. The Hornets were playing a Mystic Valley team that is not one of the stronger teams in the Commonwealth Athletic Conference. While some teams would fall into the trap of playing a weaker opponent, the Hornets came out with the focus and intensity of a big game en route to a dominating 35-8 win over the Eagles at Endicott College in Beverly. The Hornets, who improved to 2-0, were lead by a 35-point first half, and saw the backups play the entire second half.
