LAWRENCE — If Central Catholic makes a run in a wide-open Merrimack Valley Conference large division, the Raiders will point to the third quarter last night as a crossroads on the season.

After fruitlessly slugging it out against Lawrence for 22 scoreless minutes, the Raiders regrouped at the half and ran the Lancers right off their feet with a 20-0 third-quarter flurry. In the end, it was the Raiders taking home the Mill City Bowl championship trophy, 27-6, before about 800 fans here at Veterans Memorial Stadium last night.

The 5-2 Raiders dropped another crossover point into their collection baskets and now ready for the meat of the conference schedule.

The Lancers, now 2-5, were an end-zone drop and an overthrow from a two-score lead early.

The mistakes left Lawrence coach Mike Yameen to beg his troops for someone to make a play.

But Central had the playmakers.

Matt McDermott broke off a 24-yard run, followed by Trae Musumarra's exhibition of speed (a 46-yarder) and power (on a 4-yard TD) made it 7-0 Central less then two minutes into the second half.

"That first drive took the pressure off," said McDermott. "We got our momentum going and right after that we knew we could score, we thought we could win."

A hustling Devon Lattrell scooped up Cam Walsh's elusive squib kick to put Central in business again.

Five plays later, Ben Onett banged in from the one and it was 14-0, just like that.

"Down by the goal line, we actually had a play called for Trae," admitted Onett. "But I saw a huge gap in the mddle there. Last week, in the same place, I gave it to Trae. This week I wanted a touchdown."

The final blow, McDermott's 53-yard bomb to Xavier Peralta, ended the suspense at 20-0 with 1:44 left in the quarter.

Central, thanks to Chelmsford's loss last night to Dracut, owns the inside track to the MVC large title but faces a tough final month, beginning here Saturday afternoon against the Lions then continuing with dates against Methuen, Billerica and Andover.

"This game was nice, but we're thinking all Chelmsford right now," said McDermott. "Our next three games will say it all. We can prove to everyone what we can do."
