LAWRENCE — As the seconds ran out at Veterans Memorial Stadium, Central Catholic senior Jaycob Morales asked, "Do you like what you see out here?"

A wise guy shot back playfully, "Yeah, but what happened last week?"

The smile left Morales face in an instant: "Now that's not funny."

Morales and the Raiders played with that kind of intensity and a sliver of anger for 44 minutes yesterday, erasing the ill memories of the MVC opener at Dracut by starching Tewksbury, 17-0.

"It was a little bit embarrassing. That's not what Central Catholic football is about," said senior Zach Bardwell of the Dracut showing. "We knew this was big for us. We did what we had to do, and took care of business."

Bardwell hauled in a first-quarter 65-yard TD bomb from Ben Onett - sprung late by a heady Ryan Sullivan peel-back block - providing all the offense Morales, Trae Musumarra (11 tackles)and the Raider defense would need.

"I felt the kid would bite in the middle, so I just tried to get behind him, and (Onett) got the ball to me," said Bardwell. "I knew when he saw me open, he could get it over the top, and I just ran to it."

The Raiders mounted a 79-yard drive that covered the first 10:08 of the second quarter, finishing it off with Cam Walsh's 31-yard field goal for a 10-0 halftime lead.

Tewksbury managed only 41 first-half yards and lost QB Sean Connolly to injury in a nightmarish opening 22 minutes.

With backup Kevin Saunders taking snaps, Morales, Nick Bordeiano and Co. cranked up the pocket heat, forcing a pair of errant throws that Bardwell snatched for interceptions.

Tewksbury never moved the football past the Central 43, only a week after the Middies ran to an easy 27-0 lead.

"We knew we had to make stops," said Bardwell, who excelled in the secondary along with Cam Walsh, Xavier Peralta and Fortune Kalala. "The DBs locked down on their receivers. (Chris Bettano) and (Ryan Vibber) were their biggest threats on offense. We had to shut them down. We had to show our best."

Raider QB Matt McDermott, who splits time in the rotation with Onett, provided the only offense of the second half, hooking up with Xavier Peralta on a 52-yard pump-and-go TD.

Now with one out of two possible points gained in the MVC standings, 2-2 Central looks to grab another, Friday night here against Haverhill.
