PELHAM — If anyone thought things couldn’t get worse for Pelham after a 45-point pounding from Con-Val last week, unfortunately it could.

Even after removing its starting units nine seconds into second quarter play, Bedford continued to torture the undermanned Pythons, strutting away to a 48-0 victory last night.

Pelham entered the game missing three top guns (injured seniors Joe Perrone and Matt Giordano along with sophomore Kevin Cheam), leaving the hosts inexperienced and vulnerable. Most of them could be back next week, but Bedford’s defense feasted as the Pythons had minus-15 yards in offense, punting the ball eight times and suffering two interceptions.

“We have so many players that are banged up, we had to find the best way to move the ball,” said Pelham head coach Tom Babaian of quirky offensive sets that had his tackles and tight ends line up well away from the ball. “The bottom line is that Bedford played better and we didn’t execute well.”

Sophomore quarterback James Caparell was perfect for the victors, completing all seven of his passes for 145 yards and three touchdowns while taking his lone running play five yards to the house.

Junior running back Jordan Garron (game-high 65 yards) had two TDs for Bedford.

Pelham’s lone bright spots were linebackers Warren Greenhalgh, showing great mobility with a team-best seven tackles, and Tim Schaffer with five tackles, two for losses.

No. 63 becomes No. 36

Out of necessity, Pelham, senior Warren Greenhalgh was pulled from the offensive line by head coach Tom Babaian and moved to the backfield.
“It was part of the plan to get some kids at the point of attack,” Babaian explained, “but now we’ve had to take from one spot to try and fill holes.
“I don’t know if he’ll stay (as a back) when (several injured Pythons) come back. We’ll see what gives us our best chances to succeed.”
