After toppling Bishop Guertin, 3-1 on Tuesday, surprising Timberlane (5-1) had already eclipsed its entire win total (4-9-4) from 2006. While coach Jeff Petry is quick to point to a core group of six seniors who have been starting since they were freshmen as one of the biggest reasons for the turnabout, he can also point to junior defender Leah Swanson.
A forward last year for the Owls before going down with an injury, Swanson was moved to the back line this season. She has not only become the team's best back, but perhaps the team's best player as well.
"I don't think there was a huge smile on her face when I told her about it," said Petry of the switch to the less glamorous position.
"She still likes to win the ball and get forward and she still has free reign to do that and I want her to do that. But she has just been shutting people down. I think her teammates would agree that she has been our best player."
