HUDSON, N.H. — Pinkerton senior Shannon Doherty was apparently determined to extend her softball career a bit longer.

Doherty (2 for 3) drove in all three Pinkerton runs yesterday and called a superb game behind the plate as the No. 14-seed Astros (9-11) shocked No. 3 Alvirne, 3-2. in the first round of the Class L tournament. Pinkerton will now be at Spaulding Saturday at 4 p.m. in the quarterfinals.

Alvirne had beaten Pinkerton 12-8 during the regular season in a game that Pinkerton coach Terry Bailey learned a lot from.

"We had a different game plan this time and I felt (pitcher) Mel (Dusseault) and Shannon really worked well together," said Bailey. "They were really in synch."

Dusseault allowed only five hits and both of Alvirne's runs were unearned.

Pinkerton scored one run in the first when Doherrty doubled home red-hot Kasey Marraffa (3 for 4) and two more in the fifth when another Doherty double scored Marraffa agin along with Brittany Gentile.

"Considering where we were seeded, this was definitely one of our biggest (tournament) wins," said Bailey. "We showed flashes of playing this well during the (regular) season, but we put it all together today."
