Lancers leave no doubt, drill defending champs

With a rare first-inning safety squeeze bunt in yesterday's Class L semifinal win over defending champion Keene, coach Brent Demas sent a simple message to his Londonderry High baseball team.

Runs had to be had.

"Last year’s (semifinal loss to Keene) was an epic (2-1), and I felt no need or desire to go through another one of those again," said Demas.

Inspired by the early lead, Londonderry mounted a nine-hit barrage off Blackbird ace Alec Ingram.
St. Anselm-bound Dan Lagasse went 3 for 3, striking the crunching blow with a three-run double in the third that made it 8-0 Lancers.

Sophomore Dan Kinnon inflicted plenty of pain on his own, roping a two-run single in the first then kick-starting the celebration in the sixth with a mammoth 380-foot two-run homer over the fence in right-center.

With plenty of cushion, Lancer lefty Jake Finnegan took the ball and ran with it, going five overpowering innings and allowing just one earned run on two hits with five strikeouts to move to 5-1 and lower his ERA to 2.17.

"I know that (Demas) has always been confident in me, it’s been that way for a while," said the soon-to-be UMass Lowell River Hawk. "But for him to play for one run like that shows how confident he really was."

With the 10-1 lead, Finnegan left after five, yielding to freshman Ryan Moloney and saving a precious five available innings for the title game Saturday if necessary.
