With a new head coach and just two players back from last season, Andover needed a big opening statement. And the Golden Warriors found just that last night, opening the season with an impressive 25-10, 25-10, 19-25, 25-19 victory over Greater Lowell.
"This was great for confidence," said first-year head coach Dave Kuykendall. "For both the players and the coach. Everyone needed some confidence here, so it was nice to beat a quality team. This could go a long way."
The Golden Warriors were paced by the coach's son, sophomore Joe Kuykendall. The sophomore tallied a team-high 12 kills to go with 18-of-19 serving, four aces and 16 digs.
The team's other returing player, senior captain Brian McQuaide, added team-highs in assists (12) and digs (17). Chad Cameron contributed a 23-for-23 night serving while Pat Morrow chipped in a team-best five blocks.
"Joe and Brian played really well," said Dave Kuykendall. "And Colin Rivet was under the weather and couldn't play much, but when he could our passing was spectacular.
"We have (2009 Division 1 state runner up) St. John's Prep next, so it was good to get this one under out belts."
