Central Catholic | 2 |
Andover | 3 |
As hard as Central Catholic has tried, Andover just won't be dislodged at the top of the Merrimack Valley Conference standings.
Both of the Raiders' losses suffered last season came against the Golden Warriors and the trend continued yesterday in a tense 3-2 decision.
"It was a group effort," said Andover head coach Jen Griffin. "All of the players stepped up and picked each other up. Central's girls are also good, but in the end we happened to be the ones that won."
Rachel Ochs' 6-1, 6-3 victory over Maggie Hillman at second singles broke a 2-2 logjam and kept the Warriors (7-1) unbeaten in MVC play. It was the first defeat suffered by Hillman this season.
Andover's two doubles teams (Reid Campbell and Kelsey Chapman, Kirsten Arvidson and Philine Huizing) put Ochs in position for the victory.
"Every match we win is a little more motivation to keep winning," Griffin said. "The competition is always hard and we expect to help each other out. The state tournament is what we're looking toward and we used these matches to prepare."
At first singles, Jackie Carroll remained undefeated for the Raiders with her straight-set win over Sarah Arvidson. Jana Winfield garnered Central's other victory at third singles.
"We play them our last match," Central head coach Jodi Michaud said of the May 26 rematch. "We hope to get even then."
