If last Tuesday's tightly played 1-0 loss to North Andover wasn't a wake-up call to the rest of the league that Georgetown was for real, then yesterday's Royals' 0-0 draw against Masconomet made that clear.

The Royals (8-3-3), who had already qualified for the tournament, became the first CAL team to take away any points against Masconomet (11-0-3) this season. Until Monday, the Chieftains had been an impressive 9-0 in conference play.

Masconomet by no means made it easy for Georgetown to walk out with the draw, forcing 22 brilliant saves out of the Royals' star keeper Evan Weagle.

"He really kept us in the game with at least five spectacular saves," Georgetown coach Ron Comeau said. "All night he did a fabulous job of punching the ball out of danger off of corner kicks and cutting down angles.

"The save of the match though late in the game happened when one of the Masconomet players broke through the middle and took a low shot to Evan's right," Comeau continued. "Everyone at the game thought it was going in the side netting, but Evan was able to get to it and deflect the ball wide."

Managing only five shots on goal, the Royals nearly made their last one the game winner. With little time remaining Will Barrett combined on a couple of quick give-and-goes to Nick Sheffield before Ryan Browner found himself on the end of their efforts. Browner hit a solid shot, but the ball whistled just over the crossbar ending the team's threat.

"Masco is a fast explosive team, and I think our tight man-marking slowed down their machine and frustrated them," Comeau said of his team's staunch defense. "This was a total team effort and I am proud of our guys."
