Pelham shuts out Somersworth for first win

SOMERSWORTH, N.H. — Pelham put a stranglehold on Somersworth last night, 38-0. The bounce-back victory evened out the Pythons’ record to 1-1 and put a little bounce back in their step after losing last week to Trinity 20-0.

“It was a statement game for us,” said Pelham head coach Tom Babaian. “We had to establish ourselves. We didn’t want to go in the hole 0-2. This was important to us. The kids knew and they came out and did a nice job.”

The offense was led by quarterback Joey DeAngelo and running back Sean Sweeney. The two devastated the Toppers with a total of four scores in the second quarter alone.

Each had a 2-yard rush for a score then DeAngelo scored on a keeper from 13 yards out. Then he hooked up with Sweeney on a perfect pass and catch along the far side of the field for an impressive 58-yard touchdown. 

“It got ugly quick,” said Somersworth coach Kevin Hebert. “When you give up homerun balls to the two-time defending champions you can’t win. We gave up some big plays.”

The Toppers actually had a chance to score first, but a Ryan Theriault field goal sailed wide with 1:34 left in the first quarter. After that, there was no looking back for the Pythons. 

The victory is not only their first of the season, but is their first in the wake of post-Bruce Vieira era.

“When you lose a kid like that it’s not his talent but the things he did the locker room for us,” said Babaian. “You don’t replace him. It’s hard when you lose a kid like that. Life without Bruce is a slow process and we are still getting acclimated to it.”

The Toppers wanted to run behind 335-pounder right tackle Chad Letourneau but the defense was too much.

After the Pythons took an early lead, the Toppers had to bail on their game plan.

“Upfront they moved us around,” said Hebert. “In high school football it’s not brain surgery, the team that moves the line of scrimmage usually wins and tonight for the most part they were moving that back on us.”
