Ouellette, Smith double the damage for Central

TEWKSBURY- Over the first three weeks, Central Catholic football fans saw what the victor in the preseason quarterback battle, Andrew Ouellette, could do.

 

Saturday morning at Tewksbury, the other guy, Dylan Smith, showcased his athletic abilities, not at QB but at receiver and cornerback.

 

Talk about a win-win for coach Chuck Adamopoulos and the Raiders.

 

“(Andrew) Ouellette’s been phenomenal. He’s been a major force,” said the coach after Smith made a sprawling TD catch on a deflection and a bobble then later ran back an interception for a score in the Raiders’ 36-16 victory over Tewksbury.


“Dylan is contributing in other ways. I like the way he handled it and bounced back to get on the field in a different way.”

 

The coming-out party put a big smile on Smith’s mudcaked mug as he departed Doucette Field, a grin that spelled out satisfaction.

 

“Quarterback is the main position, so it was tough,” said the senior. “The wins have helped (me handle it). As long as we keep winning, you can’t really complain.  I like playing receiver too.  I just like being out there. Today I made a couple plays, and hopefully they just keep coming.”

 Ouellette continued his assault on MVC defenses, gliding through the rain-soaked glog for 210 yards and two TDs. But the 34-yard hookup to Smith that slipped through a defender’s fingers and was juggled smartly as the receiver hit the turf, clearly broke the Redmen spirit in the second quarter.

 

“I saw the ball and went for it,” said Smith of his first career TD. “He tipped it and I just made a play on it.”

 

Central, now 3-1 overall with two points in the MVC large race, dominated defensively, greeting the morning and the Redmen with some lethal physicality. Linebackers Zack Lattrell and Jaycob Morales each delivered ball-jarring hits worth of a Youtube upload as the Raider first-teamers surrendered just one score.

 

Kicker Cam Walsh put the Raiders on the board first, knocking home a 31-yard field goal in the second quarter despite the slimy conditions.

 

Tommy Lacroix  (8 carries, 87 yards, Lattrell (4-37) and Musumarra (10-32) all ran well for the Raiders, who travel to Haverhill on Friday night.
