HAVERHILL — Before most of the fans had settled in their seats, Andrew Ouellette had all but closed out a victory for Central Catholic.

After just 4:14 of play, Ouellette had rushed for one touchdown and returned an interception for another, and he added a third score by the end of the first quarter as the Raiders downed Haverhill 44-14 last night.

“It was big that we dictated the pace of play early,” said Central running back Tommy Lacroix. “We really set the tone for the day. Andrew is running all over the field and taking a lot of pressure off us.”

The Raiders relied heavily on the running game, with the rain falling hard at times and the Haverhill Stadium field caked in mud, throwing just one pass in the contest.

But the ground game was more than enough to lead Central, which finished with 305 yards on just 27 carries (11.3 yards per rush). It was once again Ouellette that paced the winners, finishing with 165 yards on 11 rushes. It was his third straight 140-plus yard rushing game, dating back to the victory over Dracut. He added touchdown runs of 13, 41 and 47 yards and picked off a pass and ran it back 38 yards for a score.

“He is doing just great,” said starting lineman Pat Rooney. “The yards he is getting are just amazing. It was wet out, and our offense was really rolling with the running game. It was great to get out early and set the tone.”

Lacroix was also a force, gaining 88 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown, Zack Lattrell added the other Raiders touchdown on a 5-yard run, and Cam Smith booted a field goal.

“We talked about the kids getting out of the gates quick,” said Central coach Chuck Adamopoulos. “We had the first score right off the bat, then the interception and it was 14-0. Our offense was really clicking, and Ouellette keeps running the ball so well. Out defense wasn’t good, but it was enough.”

Lattrell led the Raiders with eight tackles, while Nick Bordeiano added a sack and Zach Bardwell had an interception for Central.

Malcolm Novello was again a bright spot for the Hillies (0-5). The running back tallied 93 yards on 15 carries, including a 68-yard touchdown run. He also caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Austin Campbell, who came on in relief at quarterback and rushed for 52 yards on nine carries.

“(Novello) had a heck of a run,” said Adamopoulos. “It was definitely a running night. I am proud of the way our kids performed.”

It marked the fourth straight win for the surging Raiders (4-1), who now look to be the favorites in the MVC large with previously-undefeated Billerica falling to struggling Tewksbury, who Central beat a week ago. The Raiders host Lowell on Friday.

“Our confidence is very high,” said Lacroix.
