AMESBURY — Tied at 7-7, upset-minded Amesbury had Pentucket on the ropes.

It was third-and-seven on the Amesbury 49-yard line and Pentucket was stopped for a short gain.

However, a late hit on Pentucket running back C.J. Lataille drew the 15-yard penalty and an automatic first down.

Six plays later, Austin Perreault scooted in for his second score of the game, on a counter from 11 yards out. The Sachems (4-2) were able to control the clock for the majority of the rest of the game to win 24-7.

"That was a killer, it really was," said Amesbury coach Thom Connors of the penalty.

The Sachems controlled the ball for all but four minutes in the second and third quarters, marching on three long drives.

Following an interception, Pentucket quarterback Mike Doud finished off an 11-play, 54-yard drive with a 7-yard scamper. That put the game out of reach, 21-7.

Paul Treado added a 27-yard field goal to put the finishing touches on Pentucket's fourth straight win.

Pentucket held Amesbury standout Jesse Burrell to only 34 yards of offense.

Connors was impressed with the Sachems.

"They're a ball-control team, they don't turn the ball over much, and when you get a stop like that, you have to take advantage of it, and we didn't," said Connors, whose club fell to 1-4. "That was the story of the second. We didn't run many plays in the second half, and it wasn't by fault it was we didn't get an opportunity. That's what they do well: controlling the ball, and they've been doing it for years."
