HAVERHILL — Nobody seemed positive who actually won the 33rd annual John Ottaviani-Haverhill Invitational. The teams listened intently and Central Catholic erupted when it heard, ‘‘In second-place, Methuen ...’’

“We were all waiting after the 4x400 because we didn’t know if we had actually gone ahead,” explained Raiders co-coach Mike Leal.

The Raiders used a third-place in the event to make up a five-point deficit and outpoint the Rangers, 57-56.
Central, which repeated as champions, did not win a single event but placed second or third eight times. Depth and the heroics of senior captain John DiBitetto proved enough. DiBitetto anchored the 4x400 while also finishing second to Lawrence’s Francesco Cuesta in the 200 meters with a time of 23.36.

“I think today’s win reinforced how much depth we have on our team. Picking up third-, fourth- and fifth-place finishes put us in good position going into that last 4x400,” said Leal.

Despite not winning the meet, Methuen still had plenty to be proud of.

Jared Reddy (4:28.74 in the mile) and Josh Adams (21-4.5 feet in long jump) were victorious for the Rangers and Adams was second in the 100 by one-hundredth of a second.

Lawrence’s Nova takes MVP

Lawrence junior Francis Nova won the 100 and placed second in the triple jump to earn MVP honors.
Nova edged Adams 11.22-11.23.

“We’ve raced before and it has been really close in the past so I knew going into today’s run it was going to be the same,’’ said Nova.

“Me and him were neck and neck and I was just really trying to focus on finishing strong.”

Carroll breaks record

Londonderry finished fourth in the 20-team meet while boasting victories in the pole vault (Matt Charette, 12-6) and 400 (Steve Carroll, record 49.58). Carroll set a new meet record in the 400 with a time of 49.58, breaking

Andrew Grange’s (Central Catholic) previous mark.
