BYFIELD — Just before halftime it appeared that the same script would be playing out for Brooks. That was until Jordan Johnson took over.
The junior defensive back/quarterback provided a game-changing moment with five seconds remaining in the opening half, picking off a pass and bringing it back 60 yards for a score, That play turned a four-point deficit into an intermission lead and an 18-10 win over the Governor’s Academy for Brooks’ first win in two years.
“This is as good a feeling that I have had since coming to Brooks,” said first year coach Alex Konovalchik, who watched his program end a 16-game losing streak.
“This is the reason that I took the job,” said Konovalchik “To try to restore a winning tradition here at Brooks. It is working out so far. We had 16 in the wrong direction but now one in the right direction.”
Johnson had two interceptions while, offensively, he rushed for 106 yards and a fourth quarter touchdown run (10 yards) that put the finishing touches on the win.
“That interception was a game-changer,” said Konovalchik. “He took the ball away from the kid and took the ball up the near sideline, cut back and brought it to the opposite end of the end zone. It was a spectacular run.”
Brooks got on the board first with a four yard run from junior Steve Domoracki. The Governor’s Academy scored 10 second-quarter points to take a 10-6 lead before Johnson scored his two unanswered touchdowns.
Defensively, Luis Berroa, Ryan Gibeley, Brendon Emery played well up front.
“The kids are sky high,” said Konovalchik. “They are excited to come back to practice on Monday. They now feel the hard work is worth while.”
Brooks plays at Lawrence Academy on Saturday.
