TYNGSBORO — For the second straight week, North Reading went down to the wire and prevailed for a pulsating victory.
Last week, it was an upset of Pentucket, who hadn't lost to the Hornets since 1997. Last night, it was Tyngsboro, which plays in the rugged Dual County League.
The Hornets (2-0) pulled out the 12-6 win by stopping the hosts (0-2) in overtime. North Reading got the ball at the 10 on the first possession of the extra session and cashed in on a 6-yard pass from John Brooks to Darren Hartwell.
It looked like it might be a high-scoring affair when North Reading scored after the opening kickoff. Dino Rizzo scored on a 26-yard run to cap off a 60-yard scoring march. The rush failed.
Tyngsboro tied it in the second quarter as Tom Sullivan scored on a 6-yard run but the kick failed.
North Reading, which also held Pentucket to six points, flexed its defensive muscle the rest of the way.
Tyngsboro, a recent addition to the DCL after years in the Commonwealth Conference, moved from the 10 to the 3 in OT but a 5-yard penalty put the Tigers in a hole from which they couldn't escape.
The late stages of regulation were improbable to say the least. Both clubs scored in the final 30 seconds but both scores were called back due to penalties.
