CHELMSFORD — When Lawrence football began the season with six straight losses, it would have been easy for the Lancers to give up on the season.

First year head coach Rhandy Audate’s squad, however, never showed any sign of quit.

“I really believe that if our students do the right thing day in and day out, I believe it translates,” Audate said. “Their focus was here tonight. You could see it.”
Behind a huge day for QB Jacob Tamayo and receiver/defensive back Manuel Lara, Lawrence (2-6) scored its second straight victory with a convincing 34-13 victory over Chelmsford.
Top linebacker Brandon Santell also starred at running back, rushing for 117 yards on 20 carries. His 4-yard touchdown run opened the scoring in the first quarter. And while the Lancers primarily relied on Santell’s legs, they got lethal effectiveness from their junior quarterback.
Tamayo threw the ball just six times, but three of his throws went for touchdowns of 20 or more yards.
“If you’ve watched us all season, what we’ve missed is big plays all year,” Audate said. “But you know what, we have battled.”
Tamayo’s first score of the day came when he unloaded a 49-yard touchdown pass to classmate Ayvion Prak with just 16.4 seconds remaining in the first half.
After Chelmsford scored to open the second half, Tamayo found junior receiver Lara on a 54-yard touchdown pass.
“We’re building from the ground up and so this is the point now where we’re starting to click. We’re starting to connect on a few of these,” Audate said.
Lara added another big play when he came down with a tipped ball and returning it 37 yards for the back-breaking touchdown.
The Lancers would score once more for good measure, with Tamayo hitting senior Anthony Garcia from 20 yards out for the final touchdown.
“Back to the drawing board, back to work,” Audate said. “When you can do more, when you can excel, why not push? So we’re pushing.”
